What is Public involvement?
The Merchant Strategy works with area businesses to effectively compete for public and private contracts by developing new community contacts, and strengthening existing relationships.
The Merchant Strategy (TMS) is constantly working with their clients to provide services to guide them through the processes of business development, through Government Relations, marketing and Public Involvement, while staying connected on a community level.
“We want to be a part of the vibrant business community, networking, and building alliances so that we can help others grow in the community,” said TMS president Sharon Merchant.
Public Involvement consists of a series of activities and actions to both inform the public and stakeholders and to obtain input from them which influences decisions that affect their lives regarding transportation, and other day to day activities. This enables agencies to make better informed decisions and builds mutual understanding and trust between the agencies and the public they serve by providing Public Information.
The Merchant Strategy has performed these public involvement informational tasks which include holding public hearings, preparing collateral materials and websites, publicity, public relations, and advertising for the past decade, to keep the clients and the community informed and connected.
Examples of projects that might require public involvement would be complex road projects, large underground utility projects, or siting of a new landfill. In each case the lead agency (Florida Department of Transportation, Solid Waste Authority, Cities, or Counties) may be required to include public involvement as a critical part of the project to inform the public well in advance, to work in a collaborative manner to answer questions, and to resolve issues before any work begins.
Public Involvement is often a requirement for transportation engineers, road and highway construction contractors when performing jobs for Departments of Transportation, and City and County agencies. TMS has performed public involvement for the City of West Palm Beach, the Florida Department of Transportation, and various engineering companies, including Calvin Giordano, Stanley Consultants, and CDM.
“Merchant Strategy has well performed tasks related to public involvement on a number of different contracts with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and various other pursuits. We have been very happy with the services provided by The Merchant Strategy and look forward to a long and fruitful business relationship, long into the future.” said John Downes, Manager of Florida Operations, Stanley Consultants, Inc.
Public Involvement sometimes referred to as Public Outreach, can also be utilized to inform the public about small business opportunities in the community. These usually have public funding, such as the new Convention Center hotel, being built in West Palm Beach.
With the State of Florida investing a record $8.8 billion in the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), to make strategic transportation improvements throughout the state, there will be numerous new projects that require the public involvement services that TMS provides.
