Florida TaxWatch: Medical Tourism a Unique Opportunity for Florida

Florida could soon be the premier destination for medical tourists. The state already welcomes 300,000 to 400,000 medical tourists a year but more can be done. "For Florida to become the biggest medical tourism market in the USA it has to offer more than hospitals, It needs rehab facilities, sports therapy centers and other specialist facilities," says Florida Chamber Foundation Executive Vice President Tony Carvajal. "We need to use Florida's expertise in hospitality so places like Orlando can combine health care and hospitality." Florida TaxWatch research has found that Florida could increase the amount of medical tourists that the state welcomes by appropriating additional funding to VISIT FLORIDA to use for marketing across the nation and the globe. The Florida Chamber Foundation report reached a similar conclusion. According to the Chamber report, VISIT FLORIDA spent $3.1 million in 2015 for grants related to medical tourism in order to market the state's medical facilities. These grants were given to various health care providers, medical facilities and local tourism agencies.
